A soberstreet look at where this VT football team really is…

There are 17 major statistical Team categories I track. We are now ranked 17th in the Coach’s Poll. But guess where our highest unit ranking grades out to be, out of 119 D-1 college football teams???

If you said 52nd best, you are correct. 52nd is our highest unit ranking. As we are barely average in the category of Punt Returns. But take a long hard look at just where this 17th ranked football team checks in, in several other far more important categories.

  • Rushing Offense, 107th
  • Passing Offense, 98th
  • Total Offense, 111th
  • Scoring Offense, 112th
  • Sacks Allowed, 104th
  • Passing Efficiency, 108th
  • Turnover Margin, 94th
  • Total Defense, 94th
  • Tackles for a Loss, 107th

I’m sorry folks, that’s just not a 17th ranked football team in my book. Best I can suggest is…that’s an under-achieving 35th pigskin squad, or roughly thereabouts.

But all is not lost folks. OhioU has really fallen off on defense, which is quite surprising for a Frank Solich coached ball-team. The Bobcats are 95th in Total Defense. Then we play a very middled Commonwealth D-1aa school by the name of Bill & Mary. The Tribe is only 98th vs. the Run, and 92nd in Pass Efficiency Defense. Then we will serve as host for our first ACC game of the year, as the 103rd ranked Tarheel Pass Efficiency Defense of Dean Smith’s UNC enters Lane Stadium.

So while we are all still smarting from last night, we do have a very defensively user-friendly trio of winnable games to prep for the real meat of our ACC conference schedule. We will be 4-1 when we play Clemson, you may book that. The key is just how much will we improve??? That one you are gonna have to discuss. b-st.
