Beat the street: VT at Clemson

After a possible season best senior close-out nite effort inside the Cassell, our Hokies put a warp on their 2007-2008 regular season campaign down at Klempson. I kinda sorta had this game penciled in as an L, this after I said I liked our chances to win out at home. But we are indeed peaking at the right time, Klempson is good but not quite unbeatable, and the Tigers have suffered a bad break.

So we do have a better shot at this one than I had originally forecasted. Now that typed, Klempson is the favorite for a real reason. But let’s look at a few Montecore’s and a few thorns in a few paws to see who will win.

  • Klempson is 2nd from last in FT shooting in all of D-1.
  • But Klempson is 2nd in Offensive Rebounds. Do you see a connection?
  • The Tigers are 5th in Steals, 10th best in defending the 3ball, and 17th in Blocks, while netting 80 points per game for themselves.
  • Cliff Hammonds Klempson’s all-American Norm Rockwell poster-boy of a 4 year starting G has busted his non-shooting wrist; ergo, we do hold the Frank Burns edge.
  • This is senior nite for the host Tigers, so they are not lacking for incentive to win.
  • We are playing on 3 nites rest, the Tigers are Steve Corwin running on 1.

One thing I saw while studying this match-up that I liked was that Klempson’s shooting from the floor and from downtown have been a bit off of late. That’s not hurting. Then I saw just how balanced Klempson is, as all 5 starters average between 11 and 14 points per game. Now that typed, Klempson is pretty well whittled down to an 8 man rotation of late, though look for back-up Sr. Sammy Perry to log a few minutes. So there is some opportunity to wear the thin Tiger bench down a bit as this one wears on, courtesy of our fresher legs.

Each season on I’ve managed to nail down a few reaching upset picks, this is my last chance to

do so this year, so I’m gonna take my best shot. I know Klempson should win, to put it in Goldwater numbers, they win at least 65% of the time in this match-up. But not Sunday.
