Tech Poll: is there a rift on this football team?

Do you buy the message board rhetoric that there could indeed be a “rift”, or split, or a schism on this 2014 football team; or something ‘rong with this football team in subjective terms beyond all of the documented and fully objective O&M injuries? (which mind you are bad enough)

Lottsa reports are hinting at or beating around the camps have formed bush. Some posit inside of Jamerson, some aver there is an inter-Staff gap, some even speculate that the dissension is more Pivotal (i.e. Qb) oriented indeed.

Only thing I can tell you now, is that something changed at halftime of the Western Michigan game (too the good); and then something changed again during intermission down at U.n.c. (to the bad). One might even argue that Virginia Tech has just played 14 consecutive quarters of near or outright losing football. As the most recent 150 minutes worth of scoreboard reads 65-27 , against! As by the time the Boston College contest tips-off next weekend, Virgina Tech will not have enjoyed a winning quarter of football in 28, days!

spltsville
Is it camping season this time of year down in the N.R.V.?

All of that is a objective statement of quantitative temporal fact.

However, something still does not quite add up in breaking tape.

Have we become Gestalt Theory in reverse –a whole that is less than the sum of its parts?

Is this valid?

Or are injurers and youth our ONLY adversaries in 2014?

(READERs note: you may now vote for more than 1 option in this particular Poll)

Splitsville or just too damn hurt and too damn young?

    1. He has an 8 year quarter-mil’ retainer as program adviser (basically a paid schmoozer) in his old contract.
I’ve not asked if Whit’ kept it there or not in the extended one?

      HTH’s

    2. That would be a recipe for disaster IMHO. A new coach needs to bring in new ideas, without influence or pressure from his predecessor. Plus, if Frank were hovering over his shoulder, who would Whit be able to point the finger at if something went wrong – it certainly would be a bit muddier if Frank were still around. Once he’s gone, he’s gotta be gone for good – no ties to the new staff at all.

      1. I know what you mean.

Though this strikes me as an out of Office gig’.

  1. I think the issues are culture and injuries. Culture is a funny thing, hard to build and easy to destroy. New people don’t get the culture and cultural inconsistency is death. Injuries heal but culture sustains.

examples – recruiting -Frank and the old staff did not like it and did not do it well and let slip the opportunity to lock this state up. Let UVA off the mat. Also got unluck on a few picks in a bunch

We are Va Tech, we run the ball. OC wants that and says that but thinks balance, Frank says balance but to him that is run 65%, pass 35%. OC says cant run that much and tries to use short passing game as crutch. Conflict.

Brewdog now is uncertain, holding the ball. The knock on Va Tech Qbs since at least MV1 is they take sacks because they hold the ball too long. All of them??? Means its taught, just like not throwing out of bounds until CSL came along. In Frankville, sack is better than a pick and a punt is better than a sack. If there is a conflict it is running game and reining in Brewer (aside from a possible injury)

My late father taught the very same thing re: reputation.

      (or even…………………legacy)

      1. It’s only easy to destroy a good reputation. A bad rep can hang around for ages. When is the last time a QB recruit saw something to like in Blacksburg? Glennon was reigned in, clobbered, and ultimately benched all because we can’t protect the pocket. Tyrod has his redshirt burned twice. Thomas (who may or may not have been sold on being a TE) had to be our power running game. And talk is that Brewer has either been injured or reigned in, or both, to the detriment of his game.

And just imagine the rep VT has with offesive linemen.

        1. Perfectly correct.

Good=long to maintain and easily gone.
          Bad=adhesive, downright sticky.

  2. Who is the offensive leader? After beating Ohio State the players and fans rallied around Brewer. Each week since it seems that support for Brewer among both fans, players and coaches continues to disappear. Brewer is not a pro style quarterback. Our offense needs to be 100% up tempo with Brewer or a quarterback change needs to be made. The direction of our offense for next year needs to be determined now. If nobody wants Leal as quarterback, bring in the freshmen quarterbacks now so they will have some experience for next year. Our win/loss record over the next 4 games won’t be affected.

    1. Ahhhhhhhhhhh, errrrrrrrrrrrrrr, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh?
      Does that count?

A very serially fair thing to ask mark.
      I just don’t know?
How can I nominate one when I don’t see, one?

      (methinks neither do they)

      b.street

p.s. I could not agry more, we are not letting (play-calls) Brewer play his Brewer Fright Night Lights “Texas Forever” wild and wooly offensive theme-song. You are PERFECTLY correct. (though that’s not Micheal’s fault, either)

  3. IMHO things have changed since Little Beamer indicated that not running the ball is not VT football. Let me say if you are not on the inside all is conjecture. Son working for father certainly leaves the opportunity for favoritism and never discount the influence of Mom in these situation. CFB has to live with her. Add to this Stiney and the potential for a schism surly exist. It takes a Head Person with rare management abilities to hold this together to say the least.
I am not sure what the issue is but it is not one thing. Brewer certainly is not the Qb we saw at Ohio State he seems to have lost confidence and arm strength. Could be he is beat up because he has had the stuffing beat out of him.
Defense is loosing ground at an alarming rate and I believe LM and CW are the reason for that. Without Luther Collins can be double teamed and without Chase we do not have that sure tackler to spill plays to. We are not the team delivering the punch it just appears we are the team that is taking way to many punches. To me that has been VT football and it has been missing for app. 5 years in my eyes. It all begins at the line of scrimmage and we are loosing those battles on both sides of the ball. IMHO we have lost the identity of a team that may not have the absolute best talent but we will come with bad intentions and hit you until you get on the bus leaving town. IMO that is what has left town and that is the culture that is missing or the identity that has been lost.

  4. The bigger “rift” is between the fans; sad to say. The team will be chippy as can be expected in a substandard season. But the fans are worse. I always thought VT was better than the rest, but I have come to realize we are no different than any other school or fan base.

Considering the injuries this year, 2012 was a worse year IMO. Yes, all teams have injuries, but we have had them in the spots we could least afford AND we didn’t have the depth to plug and play that other teams do.

  5. Why are you asking us? You seem to inside knowledge, but won’t really say, just hint.

what does it matter what i vote when I clearly don’t nkow anything.

This is just a 24 hour news channel techniwue of showing a banner saying ‘Is John the worst whatever ever?”

Just flaming..you used to be better than this

    1. This was me testing the water.

SEEING if I could really say it, in tomorrow’s Tech Thoughts.

      (fair call-out BTW)
