Tech Thoughts: b.street weighs in on springtime VT weights!

Football Roster spring practice Weights have been posted!

So let’s get plum after it, as after this, we truly do get down to the business of sorting it all out on-field.

As per always, most guys improved during Winter conditioning; and yet there are always a few laggards who need some extra work.

Here we will continue to call hearts hearts, diamonds diamonds, clubs clubs and spades spades… as here is where real men congregate and speak truth to the power.

Though I do still think Virginia Tech to be a bit more powerful
than most others expect.

Like the oLine changes; as for the most part the right guys found lbs. and the right guys cut weight.

Sans Osterloh.
Man!
That guys like 2 Big Mac’s away from tree-fiddy (35o lbs.)!
It’s not a real rugged looking 343, either. (he could tighten his upper body; up)

Conte may not be W.Teller strong; though nobody else on this team may be Conte strong; either. He looks very good in both the arms and the shoulders/neck. Almost warhorse like.

Mars’ Williams even cut about 10 lbs. in re-hab.
Great on him.
(as this was a concern)

My boy Dadi looks like a T-bone steak at a knifed up 236.

My boy Joel Caleb is sure a strong looking guy upstairs. Lotta pop in those cans; albeit in an athlete search of an on-field Position home.

Move over Putin. This guy wins the arms-race!
Move over Putin. This guy wins the arms-race!

The legacy Smith kid really filling out nicely (294 is great for him). This guy may yet press an initial depth chart starter for P.T. before it is all said and done.

Trey Edumnds is 225? Boy, he wears it well, still just a little lean looking and he is about 10 more minutes in the weight-room removed from being completely shredded. No, make that 5 (minutes). Very powerful looking calf’s on this kid right now. (wow!)

H.Fisher cutting 17 full lbs. to move forward to Whip-Lb is a real head-scratcher? (did he bother to lift; or was this a speed-gaining move? I, don’t, know?)

Carson Lydon sure looks the prototypical Mike-Linebacking part. Don’t know if I’ve ever seen a more intricate tribal tattoo? I wonder just how much his left-arm is worth?

Gallo cut a few lbs. That should only help his mobility at C. (and his fold-blocking to the second layer) Might could use a little lifting below the belt-line however. As his legs are a little less developed than the rest of him.

Wyatt Teller’s arms?
Un-(bleeping)-real!?!
(see: pic)

Durkin looks like a Wildcat “beast-mode” Pivot at 242 lbs.!
This sure is one strong like bull northern hemisphere Qb.

Motley finding 14 lbs. is; curious?
(hope that’s all right-mass)

Donovan Riley sure looks more like a Rover right now. Almost 5% Linebacker in fact.

Seth Dooley (still) looks like he has largemouth bass stapled to his arms. Like to see him go on and play more like Roland Martin at this stage.

My almost boy R.Minor appears to have a left-elbow ding. Though he was working full on Tuesday. I’m thinking this kid is a starting ‘backer, when, not if.

Nijman is not far removed from looking totally right.
As in N.f.l. Combine right! (sheez! This kid is indeed a bonā fidē specimen)

Malleck looks all-conference right as rain to me. Just gotta stay healthy. As he is a quietly stronger than he looks Te.

Most intriguing that the quietly talked-about scout-team second-half of last season wonder, converted Tb Travon McMillian; actually cut 6 lbs., and yet looks … stronger?!? Go fig’. though maybe these whispers have a few more vibes to them then I had originally given them credit for? As a legit 4.41 forty in high school does not suck; and it prolly did not slow down any on a 6 lb. weight slice either.

#4 J.c.c. looks as right as anyone can humanly be to be a 5’6” 19o lb. Tb in a Power-Conference line-up to me. Not too bulky, not too string-bean. This porridge is just right.

Wr’s Phillips and Ford appear to have both found a little strength. Maybe not ironman caliber, nevertheless; at least they have (finally) begun to fill in.

Rookie De Melvin Khein almost looks like a Safety, maybe even a diminutive OLb? I’m real curious to see how he holds up at the point of attack at 211 lbs.? (as they swear up-n-down that this kid -at this weight- is legit) The NOC’s hint that he runs a legit 4.5o forty! We shall see…

Nigel Williams looks totally primed to me. He is much more sculpted looking off a 3 lb. weight-cut than this time last year. Really nice definition upstairs to be a down-lineman.

***

One coaching takeaway… boy does coach Stacy coach up playing lower. This is a backbreaking oLine. As in I bet their lumbar spines are a mite sore after all their chute work and scripting to stay low, lower, lowest (for as long as you can) when firing off the ball.

The biggest mover this off-season (Pro or Con) ... is???

  1. The issue with both Osterloh and Fisher likely has little to do with physicality and much to do with mentality. The big O needs to channel some W. Teller beast mode to go with that big body, while the H-man, a bona-fide big hitter, needs to adjust to the speed of D-1 college football and figure out which way to go when the ball is snapped. I hope to be pleasantly surprised by one or both of them, but I’m not holding my breath…

The biggest puzzle to me is Khein at DE. I know we need bodies at that position, but he really should be an OLB. My guess is that he’ll log most of his plays on special teams where he’ll be a veritable ball-seeking cruise missile.

    1. Metrics and size wise?
      Yah; I agry.

Bud says he’s a legit De however.
      Say he is blazing fast.
Fastest since C.Moore, in point of fact.

      Time will tell…

  2. The biggest question mark and potential for maker or breaker on the Big O is Hansen. Dude’s bio told me he was an overachiever and likely junkyard dog mentality. I was glad to see him switch to the OLine because I think that type mentality is a very needed element. He is now posting up at 3 benjamins and if he has worked on his feet as hard as in the weight room his secret service credentials will not be hurt for the passer. I have not doubt that he and Marshall Teller were the difference makers in making the running game jump up in the later weeks of last year and boosting JCC’s confidence that he was not going it alone out there. Hopefully the learning curve is steep for Mr. Hansen and he completes his apprenticeship and establishes journeyman status before the Union Holiday bash in Lane.

    1. Hansen has some mud in his eye.

Not quite on the temperamental level of Conte and Teller; though he ain’t no pus’, either.

Just that change in the mental game is a huge F5-keystroke or a breath of fresh air.

    1. Some of my peeps are pretty high on him; too.
Say he did well vs. the 1’s late last regular season.

I need to see him a bit more in person before I’ll sign off on yet another Qb/athlete is gonna do this or that.

Ike, my boy Joel, M.Davis, so many have moved, and not all of ’em have done all that.
      We shall see…

  3. Only hope Mooreheads leaving doesn’t have a negative impact on coaches involvement, liked him being loud and interaction on the sideline, kids need to know that you see them and know what they are doing

    1. I do not know coach Z.

Have yet to meet him in person.

Though everyone says he’s the calm cool collected type.
We will see how that plays out.

(I do know I like his resume`, he was a steal -not a deal- getting him that late in the hiring process)

    1. He and Ford (the Qb Ford) are like that.
      Never gonna get any bigger.

I just wish the ghost of K.Rog’ would appear and invent an: “Avoid Contact” Qb survivorman drill for him.

      1. The boy looks like he should be playing in 1975, not 2015.

You are right, tho’, be nice if he learns to avoid the big men who mean to do him harm.

        1. Great call!
          Yes, very much.

He would have been an ideal hell-raising caddy to the “snake” Stabler out in Oakland.
