The William and Mary Eye in the Sky……

The fans, Kenny Lewis Jr., several big hits, the improving Hokie defense, and my 2007 Play of the Year. All right here. I really liked how our defense opened the game…

1st Quarter 15:00-14:00 remaining: really a hardcore old-school tone-setting start by our defense. There were 3 different physical collisions on the 3 plays to start the game. Just note the heightened raw intensity we showed, this is every Defensive Coordinator’s opening dream come true. (Hall, Hall, and Ellis in order)

1st Quarter 10:41 remaining: see the now heavier, and therefore stronger X stand up and shed the starting C of W&M (#53) just beyond the point of attack. X of 2005 could not have done this, and X of 2006 would have struggled to do this.

1st Quarter, 9:00 mark, the rest of 2007 remaining: note both of our front-line’s and their stances at the Line of Scrimmage. Under Newsome, our OLine has switched to a left-handed stance on the left side of our C. This is textbook correct, though it does take some getting used to for right-handed ballers. Now note how Wiles allows his guys to line up, in that we are using an inverted version of what Newsome does. Our down hand in the kla-assic 3-point stance is the one nearest to the C. This can do 2 things. It can pinch off the middle, which in theory would keep traffic away from V.Hall, and allow Hall roam freely behind our DT’s to make plays. The Stillers did this with “Mean Joe” and company to free up Lambert under Defensive Coordinator George Perles. However, it also makes blocking down on our DT’s (by an OT and or TE) easier as well. IF I see this stance, I’m running outside on us. Watch and see how this develops over the season.

1st Quarter 5:00 remaining: don’t read any further if you are easily made squeamish, ok? Shu’ accidentally put #66 D.Toon into a potentially downright nasty hi-lo block on this goaline play, when one of Toon’s own teammates unintentionally submarined #66 as Shu’ was drive blocking him from above. The result was just not pretty, right ankle injury to #66. Godspeed to Toon.
1st Quarter rest of 2007 remaining: now note where we are tending to roll-out our Qb’s (both T-Mobile and Holt), and where we tend to run outside? If you said in the direction of D.Brown, or even if you said away from Marshman, you Sir are correct. I’ve seen this since T-Mobile entered the LSU game, if my 60-20 eyes can see it, so can opposing Defensive Coordinators.

1st Quarter 2:20 remaining, my Play of the Year: several major parts to this play

  • first of all, note that we are still audibling in from the sideline for T-Mobile, that could result in a Delay of Game penalty before 2007 ends.
  • on the far right hand side of the play, note #20, Kenny Lewis Jr. getting knocked flat on his wallet. That looks bad, because well, it is bad. But KLJr. did sorta remain in the way of the W&M defender, so while KLJr. will be joked unmercifully during film-study, his man did not make the play.
  • note D.Brown with the always sneaky peal-back steal on #35 the W&M strong-side-LB. Note to future opposing players, DB is indeed sneaky, and I love that in a football player. It shows me a guy who does not let up, and keeps looking for somebody to hit. DB has 5 or 6 sneaky steals on 2007, and he’ll get a lot more before this year ends.
  • finally note how T-Mobile flows in the open field. He’s not quite cutting on a dime and breaking ankles, he’s not juking, he’s not jump-cutting. But what T-Mobile does have is great hips to shift his acceleration vector so effortlessly as this play shows. T-Mobile would be very tough to beat in the so-called old-school eagle drill.

2nd Quarter 12:33 remaining: note the retaliation by the W&M Special Team’s after Eddie Royal extending his #1 right index finger on the touchdown scoring previous punt.

2nd Quarter 3:15 remaining: note Marshman nearly rolled up from behind by T-Mobile after T-Mobile is sacked by #93 and #6. This play was only a few degrees from making our bad OLine much much worse.

2nd Quarter 2:00 remaining: Greg Brady has stolen all of Alice the maid’s bleach and made an ill gotten attempt at becoming the “Nature Boy” Ric Flair. Trust me, it’s bad.

3rd Quarter 9:30 remaining: see the very very nasty knee injury to Chris Drager #86. Looks like the old-school hurdle stretch gone wrong via catching his cleats, and the crushing weight coming down from above. Don’t watch unless you want to rent your lunch. It’s really not a pretty play. Prayers for CD.

3rd Quarter 6:30 remaining: see a WWE choke hold from the W&M right-OT applied to #82 Steven Friday. Somewhere former N.W.A. ref Tommy Young, and “Gorilla” Monson are smiling while they look the other way.

4th Quarter 12:37 remaining: 2 steals take place right ahead of the pile up on the “Macho” Harris punt return. Both are a bit sneaky, but perfectly 100% Colorox clean.

4th Quarter 7:03 remaining: see Holt with the same cock-eyed (left foot back) Bernie Kosar stance I’ve been hammering T-Mobile for. I actually went back and reviewed the game film to verify the veracity of the following statement: Sean Glennon has a textbook A+ stance. In both the shoot-gun and under C. Which makes me wonder why O’Cain is teaching this (to our mobile Qb’s) or not correcting this in the same??? Someone will eventually trip over or step on those juxtaposed left-feet, it’s only a matter of time.

See a play you wanna talk up, or something that I missed? Tell me all about right below. b-st.
