Yet another UNC, this time it’s UNC’G, or UNC-Greensboro who invades the Cassell….

A Southern Conference team, from our very own former all-sport genealogy. But who will win, and why? Here are a couple of things that strike me right away about UNC’G and our very own hoopster Hokies…….

  • UNC’G is the very 1st team I’ve covered for TSL.com that does not have a true C, or even a 4-5 combo player listed on their roster.
  • Not one single player in the UNC’G rotation stands north of 6’6” tall.
  • UNC’G runs 6 G’s (and 2 F’s) in it’s 8-man rotation. i.e. a very Backcourt heavy team.
  • Just like the last UNC’whatever, we are quite possibly this UNC’whatever’s game of the year.

As for our Hokies, I’m noticing that our Defensive FG% allowed, at home, is 6% and change better than it is compared to our Defensive FG% allowed seasonal average. That tells you a little something something about our degree of Youth in the pedigree SG extra possessions=wins scheme of things. Also interesting in terms of VT defense is that our Hokies are now 48th in Blocked Shots in D-1. When was the last time you saw that kinda Hokie Vital? Way back to the days of Roy Brow? UNC’G is #1 in the Southern Conference from downtown, and 55th in D-1 (our Hokies are actually right behind UNC’G at 56th). Mikko Koivisto (#4 on the right) is 9th in D-1 3-pointer percentage, and Kendall Toney (#15 above) is 34th. UNC’G has won 9 in a row when holding teams to 70 or less.

So we must shut UNC’G down on the perimeter to win, it’s that simple. Inside the Cassell with our boys playing far better defense at home than overall, I say we will. Virginia Tech 71 UNC’G 67.
