What are the odds on having to play the United States Naval Academy on December the 7th???God Bless our people who serve.

67 years after the day of days for our country.

I’m not one to ever hope we/VT get beat; but somehow it seems fitting that Navy should win every single game on the 7th of December. But can they win? How good is this surprisingly 7-1 Navy hoops team???

Navy at a glance:

  •  A rock solid defensive rebounding team checking in at 18th best on the defensive glass.Old-school canvas CT's right here!
  • 71st best in defensive FG% allowed, and 70th best in offensive scoring; along with bullet point number one and you do have a 7-1 hoops team on your hands.
  • Navy is very physical; as the Midshipmen commit the 8th most fouls in all of D-1 hoops.

That’s pretty well Navy in a nutshell. They have not really played much of anybody, but they have beaten their nobodies; which is exactly what good teams do.An inside and outside scoring threat.

Navy is paced by near 20 point scorer Kaelo Kina from Hawaii whos name literally means: ” the voice from Heaven”. Kina is a fine scoring G in Patriot League terms and he is an obvious candidate for some sorta post-season all-conference award. Navy has a total of 4 starters back from last year. The Middies are pretty big upfront. They have a legit 6`11“ Center in one Mark Veazey who goes 240 and change. They have a legit power-forward in one Adam Teague who stands in at 6`8“ and 23o lbs.

Navy fundamentally only plays 7 or 8 guys. So watch for fatigue to be a possible plot-line here after a one day turnaround from beating UPenn on the road. Though Navy does score more points than you would expect for a normally spartan spit-and-polish well disciplined and highly structured Military Academy type program.

Right now Virginia Tech R.A.T.T. ranks where in the Big East?

However, upon further review, we see that 4-5 Bill & Mary took Navy into the deep waters of OT. Then lowly 2-3 Radford did the same. So this Naval Academy hoops team is not quite so smart as their 7-1 overall record suggests.  In fact, Navy has not beaten a winning team all year and four of the teams Navy has faced can only combine for a miserable 3-21 on the year. So yes it is nice that Navy is 7-1 at this point in time, but this is not much of a 7-1 hoops team when you see who Navy has played and how Navy has twice struggled to win. That said, we can not catch a break at the Midas Factory outlet store. Navy is better on defense than we are right now, and this is a foreign gym where I expect cold shooting. That keeps this one low and this one close. Sorry to have to do it, but Navy will steal this one as we are their basketball Super Bowl when you have to play Holy Cross, Colgate and Lehigh ten times each per year.
