Tech Poll: what should Whit do with Frank?

Whit and Frank
In non Pitt-stomped times…

Objective Fact: Virginia Tech has slipped into upper-middle middleocrity UNDER Frank Beamer in the last 2.7 seasons of play.

19 up and 16 down or 3 games above .5oo says so.

Objective Fact: first-ballot Atlanta Georgia bound College Football Hall of fame inductee in waiting, one Frank Beamer, is on Whit’s dime thanks to Whit’s very own contract extension up through the conclusion of the 2o18 football regular season. A total number that will at least flirt with $10,000,000.oo in actuarial before it is all said and done.

Subjective Fact: what exactly is in ascent regarding Virginia Tech football right now?

Think about that one men…
…there is some new underclassmen offensive talent, at least at Tb, and Wr, maybe even at Qb, and what else?

Now try and make this sure to be rather salty and/or objectionable, and highly highly subjective call…

IF this at or near .5oo trend contuines for the 3rd year, Whit' really shold do what with Frank?

  1. Bstreet, while I voted to let Frank stay as long as he wants, clearly SOMETHING needs to be done to shake up the program. There is a mounting body of evidence that Scott Loeffler is not the solution for our offensive woes and, sadly, that he isn’t an effective QB coach either. Scott appears to be the ultimate Xs and Os guy who may have a brilliant scheme, but simply can’t get his players prepared to execute that scheme.

Whit needs to “convince” Frank to once more clean house on the O side of the ball – and that includes “little Beamer” as well. My guess is that the latter is the deal killer, and we will endure one or two more seasons of mediocrity before FB hangs up the clipboard and we all move on. In the mean time we will see a lot of empty seats at Lane.

    1. Uh….we keep changing offensive coordinators and offensive coaches and we still get the same results. I think it’s time (finally) to admit that it’s not the coaches….it’s the players. You can say that it’s the coaches responsibility to prepare the players to execute the game plan, but perhaps the players Tech has are incapable of carrying out the game plan. “Cleaning house” every two years is not going to achieve anything if the material that the coaches have to work with are sub-par. As the old saying goes….you can’t make a silk purse from a sow’s ear. What has to change is recruitment….and I’m not sure Tech can sell the program to this generation of high school players with Frank at the helm. Like you, I think Frank gets the benefit of the doubt and leaves on his own accord, but I don’t think the program gets the needed lift until there is a younger head coach at the helm.

      1. Duke doesn’t out-recruit us but they’re winning and we’re losing. ECU doesn’t out-recruit us but again, they’re winning and we’re losing. Bud has missed out on as many big recruits on the D side as we have on the O side, and yet he fields a competitive unit week after week, even with injuries to key players. I’m not arguing that we shouldn’t try to recruit better players, but I’m tired of the excuse that our current players aren’t good enough to win – and I’m not talking national championships here, just the ACC Coastal division where we SHOULD be competitive given the caliber of the competition.

  2. Takes time.. Yes, we crashed hard a couple of years ago. CFB cleaned house, and changed direction. Our good luck ran out. We cant just hire some new folks and expect a dramatic instant turn around. Maybe if the recruiting had been top notch, new coaches would have instantly gotten us results. Were essentially playing with 2016’s team, and we have to get there with what we have. There are 125 teams all trying to be #1, and probably 20-30 that shuffle in and out of that conversation every year. Even if we could get Saban, we’d have great years and building years. FWIW we’d probably not be able to get as smart or dedicated of a coach as CFB… And if we did, Someone would come in and grab them as soon as they started becoming top 10. The grass isn’t greener, and we are extremely blessed to have an alumni that’s a great coach, and is loyal. The next guy may not be able to create the magic, and he’s not going to feel home.. Unless its Bud or Torrian, that is. We have work to do, but Frank hasn’t given up, hes a smart and dedicated coach, and hopefully we’ll see great results. Just remember there are 120+ good coaches all busting their a$$ to compete, and were going to be in and out. The line between top 25 and bottom 25 isn’t nearly as thick as it used to be.

    1. IMHO, Frank did not clean house on his own free will 2 years ago. Like 21-22 years ago, I believe he was told to do so. Point being, love Frank but he has a very hard time changing. We are in for more of the same until he decides to retire. Very difficult situation.

  3. I voted “for god’s sake B Street”, but in reality I’d have one more option. I’d give Frank 2 more years, at least, and if we don’t see improvement in that time, then I might try to talk with Frank and try to give him a nudge in the right direction.

But I don’t think that will be necessary. I don’t see Frank as a Bowden or Paterno type who is going to hang on tooth and nail. If he’s not turning it around, I think he’ll see that.

  4. Give the offensive guys some time. For the first time in a long time, we have some great quarterback back talent in waiting. Plus, everyone is raving over our receivers. The big challenge is to make sure we have a strong line. The perfect example is Mississippi State. Their recruiting profile is alsmost identical to ours. It just takes the right tweaking and chemistry.

  5. We won @ osu. Since then, we’ve had 1/2 a QB (concussed), 1/2 a D-Line (broken), 1/10th RB (all gone), 1/10th O-Line (not there to start with), and 1/20 OC (hands full with new baby). Whose going to win with 1/7th of a team?
