Tech Thoughts: Frank Beamer isn’t on the solid footing he once stood on.

Frank Beamer isn’t on the solid footing he once stood on.

I’m not so sure Jared?

As when someone who looks a whole lot like, well, me, last interviewed our Athletic Director; said Athletic Director Whit Babacock last month, Whit sure seemed pretty supportive of his contemporary head men’s football coach. So supportive as to be virtually defensive when I asked him about being a: “change agent” as his very own Virgina Tech sporting legacy will still like be written.

Still yet, Frank turns 69 years old this season, and he clearly has fewer coaching miles out in front that he does in his soon to be Hall of Fame coaching O&M mirror.

So exactly what type of footing does the recently severe throat-surgery patient enjoy?
You tell Jared Shanker (and me) here, down below…

Call me a tried and true Hokie homer all you want, though I for one do not view Frank’s current O&M traction or footing as all that lacking or wanting indeed. In particular after receiving such a sympathy vote from the mighty Hokie Nation after receiving such a severe throat surgery subsequent to the 2014 regular season last year. As last time I checked, nobody is ever in a hurry to be the hatchet-man who has to take an axe to a legend. Much less a living legend who just had what amounts to be a highly sympathetic hatchet-job just preformed on his aging throat. Raise your hand if you want that job? Me neither…

Still yet, and in the interest of calling it: “right down the middle”, I did find this quote from Mister Shanker’s article a little more illumining…

” The Hokies face a tough decision of whether another mediocre season(s) would necessitate the need for a fresh perspective.”
-Jared Shanker, ESPN

Is that fair?

As to me  that taking-point is faaaaaaaaaaar more worthy of discussion that anything else was in Mr. Shanker’s sitzkrieg of an lull-time off-season article.

A 98.6f seat?
A 98.6f seat?

So, just how secure is Frank’s job at this moment? This from an 8 time Conference champion who won College Football’s coach of the year award in 1999; and oh by the way has only racked up 273 total wins along the way. Who is also currently the active college football Win’s leader for all of Division-one.

o-100………rate Frank’s job security for me right now?

o=pink-slip, lame duck, already fired
100=lifetime contract, good as gold, with only self-terminate at will

***

Clearly those two options are straight out; at least at this moment.

However, there is room to discuss or even debate just how secure Frank’s head coaching job R.A.T.T. truly is.

So you tell me, and Mister Shanker how you really feel…

Put thy hand on the O&M Bible and swear just what temperature seat is Frank Beamer sitting on @Virginia Tech?

  1. We’ve just completed 3 mediocre seasons in a row (7-6, 8-5 and 7-6). What’s a fair number of mediocre seasons that Frank deserves to have as a reward for all the great things he’s done?

It’s difficult to put a number on it but business requires numbers – if it was up to me, my number would be 5.

    1. @Hokie90: I keep writing and saying that the last three seasons remind me of 2001-2003. VT went 11-10 in the Big East those three seasons, and 26-13.

In the last three ACC seasons, VT is 12-12 in the conference and 22-17 overall. Very similar numbers, and very similar unrest in the fan base (though the conversation is different now, due to Frank’s age).

I don’t know that Frank “deserves” five mediocre seasons, but I think the question is moot, anyway, because I will be very, very surprised if he coaches beyond 2016, anyway.

  2. Yah; and I do feel that.

The opposition will have me point out that 4-5 is one full recruiting cycle; as well.

  3. Coach FB deserves to be treated with great respect given what he has contributed to VT over the years. But the time has come for a transition to a new coach. Note that I said transition – meaning a thoughtful and planned change that does not diminish either Coach FB or VT’s reputation. Though none of his fault, I believe Coach FB is more a liability than he is an asset to the VT football program in the recruiting trenches because other universities are using his age to put a fear factor in the minds of recruits that there will soon be major turnover in the VT coaching staff. Recruiting is the lifeblood of a program, so the time to plan the transition is now.

I hope Coach FB sees that himself, and I hope he planning to retire on a high note after the 2016 season which includes the Battle in Bristol. I think it would behoove the VT program and Coach FB to go ahead and identify his replacement and announce the transition at the end of the 2015 season to minimize the impact of negative recruiting an show everyone how well both he and VT can handle such a momentous change in leadership.
