Tech Thoughts: Net discipline Gain(es) or an Alexander great talents L?

 #WellThatWasQuick!

BOOM! outta here...
BOOM! outta here…

Virginia Tech acting summarily here folks! Check it out… do you see what I see? Or rather what I do not see? As I do not see Adonis Alexander nor Houshun Gaines on the Virginia Tech football Roster no more!

This gives some new meaning to swift justice, does it not? However, where do you come out on this? Do you discipline them? Do you suspend them? Do you kick them off the football team entirely for marijuana? Now, I’m not for pot, never having done any. However, last time I checked if you truly did crack a zero tolerance policy whip? Zero football players is not super far from what you’d have left. Though what’s a brand new head football coach-Fu to do as his first (public) major disciplinary decision is now firmly and resolutely thrust upon him? It is an easy call for some; unless of course it is not. So, what kinda call is it for you?

The suck of this to me is… the football performance or lack of maturity and downright selfishness thereof. In reverse order, you do something like this, and you are hurting yourself, your fellow players, your coaches, your team, your athletic department, and your school overall. And despite everyone now (falsely) being labeled “pretty” and “beautiful” on facebook.com, I’ll let you in on a little moral secret. Life ain’t about the singular pronoun, Y, O. U. As there may not be an “i” in the word team; although actions such as these place the onus squarely up on the “me”.adonis Alex

However, and what I really wanna size up -as I know there will be some strong discussion on whether or not smoking pot is or is not a big deal- what I wanna focus on is… this is a pretty dang set of talented O&M players. Possibly, …  no more.

Second year Boundary-Cb Adonis Alexander was rightfully named. As his 6’3” 199 lb. twisted steel frame resembled that remark. And he had all the Boundary-Cb tools you could ever hope for. Physical, fast, impacting. Physically willing vs. the run and in man-to-man coverage alike. Someone had compared him to a leaner man’s Kam Chancellor per the same. Broad shoulders for his weight, willing to hit. Not a sofite, not someone most would self-select for Bull-in-the-Ring. Alert and played the ball well in the air, too boot, just ask is INT ratio of a pick every other game.

Rookie Stud-De Houshun Gaines had the potential to inflict the word “stud” upon the De spot itself. This guy -same as Alexander above- had all the metrics and all the tools. 6’5” 233 lbs. worth of bamboozling De that could move. Someone has already written about the likeability of his T-bone cut game in a ground chuck world. Classical L.C. Greenwood ability to play downhill or collapse the line-of-scrimmage, inwardly. Therefore making Bud Stout close to +1 in Gap integrity. Quick off the line-of-scrimmage, ahead of Hill, too!HGanines

Point being, I’m not sure which one has more pure talent? I am however  sure that each one was at least a B+ talent, with the possibility to finish at an A-something ceiling letter grade wise, once their eligibility was up. Maybe even a fringe Pro’ here between the two.

I’m also sure this is a major talent downgrade for any already thin looking Hokie 2016 stop-unit club. As I do not (quite) see another per se Island or Boundary-Cb with this level of physicality. And I only see the Hill kid as having the juice to truly fill the Stud-De prescription in disruptive football chasing terms.

Though what’s a coach-Fu to do?

This is his first mover disciplinary big chance. As you never get a second-chance to make a first impression. Is smoking pot that big of a footballer deal in 2016 terms? You tell me in the Poll and in the space below…

…what would you do if you ran the coach-Fu discipline zoo?

What would you do if you were coach-Fu?

  1. We don’t know the entire story. First offense, dumbass with an attitude, or last chance just used?

TEAM is not spelled pot. Ask the seniors what to do to see where things are and then severe, at least at first. Looks like coach decided on severe.

    1. True (on whole story).

And I for one will be very intrigued to see if the old Laundry List is still there?
Or has coach-Fu imported his very own?
(be that a lighter or harder touch)

  2. Not sure the legalistics here, but I’d be lookin’ at taking away some of that hard earned “new money” they are getting plus make them watch a few games from the sidelines. I would keep them “invested” in the conditioning program for sure, as well as getting some consultation from the seniors.
I think the punishment needs to be “attention getting”, but I also feel that being a hard ass just to be a hard ass isn’t the way to go.
Of course none of this matters if the school says goodbye!

    1. Yah; more than one way to skin a (ill) disciplined cat.

I have no idea if coach-Fu is down for the $$$ approach?
Though that seemed to get Whit’s attention the last time that came up; and Whit did not seem in love with that idea. Though that was before coach-Fu, too.

  3. Every incident should be punished. Once the punishment has been served, then give them a 2nd chance.
Not sure if suspension is proper or enough. How about letting them choose suspension or back on the team immediately and loose scholarship for a semester.

    1. That’s an interesting one.
      Schoolie v. suspension.

      Far out.
      your choice, too.
(so YOU do not get to complain, as you did get to pick your poison)
      +1 for original thinking!

  4. Quick trigger fingers are only beneficial if you live in Tombstone or attend Rand University.

…. Selfish, arrogant, immature are all fair statements to their actions.
…Yes they should be suspended for a couple of games including Bristol.
…Yes, the penalty should include more than just conditioning as theirs some judgement issues here that need addressing to prevent long term issues
…Yes they let their teammates down and need to be on the outside looking in for awhile to ensure understand the impact & loss opportunity.
….Yes suspended from all football activity until their legal issues have been resolved.
…but No they should not be kicked off the team as this is a teachable moment and life lesson.

    Firm but Fair.

  5. If this turns out to be a misdemeanor charge, I say make some form of community service part of the punishment. As the post above says ..staying part of the conditioning program would be a definite requirement……. the huffing and puffing, with a dose of yacking if you get my drift. And it should be a long term conditioning plan. Paraphrasing Strother Martin in the classic Cool Hand Luke…. What we have here is a failure to communicate. We need to get your mind right. (loved that movie)
I like the part of having Sr involved with coaches oversight of course. Lastly has to be at least a one game suspension but if more I am OK with it. If rules are broken then consequences are required.

  6. Oh yes.
More than 1 way to make ballers spark up to some: “huffing and puffing“.

    If they are back?
They would be leaner –having run like a Junction Boy mile, for it. If it were me.

  7. Let’s just pretend that this still isn’t going on so we can pretend that America is a just place for all people. Not just the white ones.

  8. Suspend them for ALL SUMMER games and then think twice before naming them captains.
    Somewhat tic.
