The ECU game awards are ready to be handed out…

The Lynn-Swann velcro award for best grab of the day. Surprisingly, and hands down, this one does not go to a WR or a TE, but rather to…….

Branden Ore for his single handed showcase snag along the ECU sidelines. My spys had told me for a couple of years just how soft Ore’s hands are. In fact B.Ore has 24 receptions in barely over 2 years of play. That’s not a low number for a VT Rb, and not a whole lot of WR’s in D-1 have a tougher catch to showcase on their career resume.

The Tony Soprano, hit of the game award goes to #1 for ECU, Mr. Leon Best. I almost gave this one to Carlton Powell for his perfectly clean, but near late hit on a Royal punt-return. But Mr. Powell out-weights Mr. Best by a full 100 pounds. Probably took a bit more outta Mr. Best to crush Branden Ore than it did when Mr. Powell crushed an ECU back-up special teams scrub on a blind-side over the pile hit on a punt return.

The Magna Cum Laude award for the heady play of the day goes to none other than Sean Glennon for his throw to a wide open ECU sideline under pressure as he tried to escape the rush moving to his right late in the third quarter. Sean Glennon of last year would likely have hit the snooze button on his pocket protection alarm clock and eaten a Sack. Or even worse forced a throw in between the numbers of an ECU defender. This year Mr. Glennon wisely threw the ball to no one in particular, and lived to fight another day from the next down, and same distance.

The Ray Guy, Billy “white shoes” Johnson, special team award goes to #80, Branden Dillard for his Barnum and Baily high wire act, in which he tip-toed along the goal line just long enough to bat a testy Bowden punt back onto the filed of play where it was downed on the one. This was easily the best VT special teams play since Wayne Ward annihilated kyle kaden of wvu on a punt-return a few years back, and though not as compelling to the masses, it was truthfully the far more skillful play.

The Humphrey Bogart Casablanca award for most dominating performance goes to….ECU LB Quentin Cotton, (in the pic to the right). Quentin lead all tacklers on the field on Saturday afternoon, both Pirate and Hokie alike. All Mr. Cotton did was ring up 14 total tackles, 2 Tackles for a Loss, and 1 Qb hurry. In addition to that, our best second-half drive occurred when Quentin suffered a right calf cramp due to dehydration. Coincidence? I know not.

The King Kong big play of the day award goes to Victor “Macho” Harris, for his game breaking return of an errant Brett Clay pass, 17 yards for the winning margin in an otherwise setting up to be a one play game. “Macho” defended two other passes, had 2 tackles and 1 assist. Not a bad day at the office for a guy nursing a sore hamstring.
