Thursday night viewing guide: Big-12 @ the ACC…

aTm visits the so-called “U”, as the Aggies travel to play the University of Miami Hurricanes in prime time to kick-off week four of the 2007 college football season. Which presents us with a friendly opportunity to scout the ‘Canes, and to look ahead to our very own November 17th match-up in Lane…

Four words sum up why this is must-see college football TV to me: Jorvorskie “freight-train” Lane. Who is Mr. Lane you ask? That would be aTm’s 270+ pound Rb, #11 in the pic to the right. Dude is nothing short of a monster; a brutal wrecking-ball of a Rb, who hearkens back to the irresistible force days of Pete Johnson of mid 1970’s Cincinnati Bengal fame. In short, this guy is very fun to watch.

But aTm also has a Qb, and another Tb who have already trumped the 100 yard single game rushing plateau this year. Hence the Aggies enter tonights game on the strength of the 5th ranked ground attack in all of D-1. So Miami must stop the aTm running game in order to win. Normally, you’d have to like “The U’s” chances to do so at home. Primia facie, this reminds me of Miami vs. the Big-12 back in the early 1990’s (i.e. too much defensive speed in favor of the Canes).

But this is actually a fairly svelte aTm OLine, as it only fields one baller north of 299 pounds. So that’s a better match-up than your typical rotund Big-12 Olinemen chasing speedy Miami defenders, and never quite getting there would normally suggest. On top of that, Miami has 2 starting LB’s, both of their top-2 SS’s and a back-up DE, all likely to sit out tonight’s game. The Aggies on the other hand are actually getting their starting Fb back for tonight’s tilt.

Then there is the Miami offense. Gone are the days of Kosar and Kelly playing behind an offensive line that always seemed to have at least 2 future Professionals on the field at all times. Here are the days of Wright and Freeman, two very middled Qb’s, both of whom can not complete more than 52% of their passes, playing behind a less talented and much thinner OLine. aTm has one of the better Punters in D-1, and the far better OLine between these two. This one will be relatively low-scoring, and it will stay close throughout. But I like aTm (who has won 9 in a row on Thursday night), to be a model of consistency and to win this one by a full play or less, down on South Beach. b-st.
