If there is an overlooked B.C.S. front-runner, this is it.

If you are a member of the 1st-school class of pigskin Americana; this is surely your team for 2008. Both offensive and defensive line of scrimmage dominance? Check.  Rough, tough, smashmouth leather helmets with no facemasks and therefore no mouthpiece? Check. One of only three D-1 football teams to have all eight units ranked by Phil Steele? Check.

But a team with just a few Candy Apple chinks and cracks that at least one team could exploit? Check.

If you wanna try a chalky front runner for the Big-12 this year, OK can make a very convincing case for themselves; as they are the 2008 Perry Mason of the Big-12, possibly of the nation on the whole. Potentially the first best OLine in all of D-1? Yup.A no worse than top-5 Dline in all of D-1? Yup. The returning 2007 Passing Efficiency leader at Qb? Yup.

On offense all the boomer Sooners really need is a quality ground gainer to emerge. DeMarco Murray and his 6 per carry last year should do nicely, and when that is not working 3 of the top-4 pass catches from 2007 should pitch in smartly. The OK Dline is in a word…brutal. But the Sooners do need to develop 2 OLb’s and 2 new Db’s. Remember the name Austin Box as the next big Linebacking thing in the Big-12. Db is a bit cloudier, Jackson was a back-up last year and the other Db (Franks) is a true blue untried rookie. So expect to see opponents attack OK on the edge of the field. Special Teams are nearly 100% new as well. So watch that in any given close game for OK this year. The Sooners do have a friendly schedule this year, but there are at least two avenues of Candy Apple exploitation right there. Strengths=best combo frontlines in all of D-1, efficacious offense. Needs to improve=ST’s play and pass defense.

We just do not have the strengths to take advantage of the potential OK weaknesses.

Oklahoma 28 VT 15.
