Frank Beamer’s new contract: do you Approve or Disapprove?

Unless you live under a rock, or have recently been hit in the head by a rock, you prolly already know that Whit’ Babcock  and Virginia Tech just extended head coach Frank Beamer’s contract up through 2019!

This is code for 5 more seasons of Frank.

And Frankly speaking, this is code for a head coach, coaching into his mid-70’s  (74) in today’s all tricked out modern-era game. This on the heels of 15 wins in 26 games in Frank’s most recent (eventual) Hall of Fame seasons have indeed been a bit south of epic. This all from the most winningest active head coach in all of D-1 football! 266 first place leading wins says so!

Though where do you come out on this contract extension???

Two schools of thought exist here…

  1. accordingly to my McBryde Hall 36 hours of Calc and Stats, Frank needs 36 more wins and he has five more seasons go get to the tercentennial or coaching trifecta plateau of 300 total coaching wins! (or he needs to average a rather pedestrian looking 7.2 wins per season from here on out)
  2. on the less objective side, there are some subtle subjective whispers outta Blacksburg Va., that Frank must know something folks! i.e. he knows he is suddenly loaded with handsome enough underclassmen talent and/or he knows something regarding incoming scholastic youthful pipeline talent. (has Frank once again caught lightening-n-a-bottle?)

As there are numerous Social Media reports that some of you are not very happy with extending the winningest active head coache’s deal by two years. I’m seeing reports of:

  • WHY?
  • I’m not a fan of this…
  • …selfish move!

Really?

Maybe I am actually in the minority here -and while admitting that things did get a bit stale at Virginia Tech two years ago- is the winningest active head coach in D-1 football, and surely the greatest head football coach at his given school (VT) …NOT entitled to go out on his own terms? Really? I mean, realllllllllly?!?

Frank montage
This guy has not done, enough?

Ok.
Maybe he’s not.

This is America after all and here everyone has every right to be ‘rong.

So let’s agree to disagree; and then agree that:

discuss>>>disagree

I’ll hear you out and give you a fair shake if you went “negative g.rider” on this contract extension in your vote. Please, just take the time to educate me as to “why?” (in the comments space provided below)
TIA!

How say you: ...Whit Babcock and VT should have extended Frank's contract through 2o19???

  1. Hell to the YES… unless he brings back some of the old coaches! But since he’s got a fairly good staff in place (I reserve the right to re-visit that statement at a latter date), I say keep the old boy. On a serious note, when I compare FB to just about every other coach out there, I don’t see arrogance, I don’t see sleaze, I don’t see someone that embarrasses himself or the university. But I do see someone who, when he see’s mistakes he’s made, he attempts to correct them. Not with knee-jerk reactions but with a well thought out plan (witness the O-Line coaching adjustments). As long as Mr. Frank continues conducting his business and the business of the football program in this manner, I wouldn’t care if he got yet another extension. Geaux Hokies, Geaux Frank and Geaux away all of you nay-sayers! (All 3 of you if my McBride math is correct!)

  2. I like the contract extension and I like the way Whit handled it. I also like the timing of the announcement. It obviously can’t hurt recruiting in the short to medium terms. Bud and Lefty have said as much themselves, and I think most people can get on board with that thinking.

The other thing that strikes me about this is somewhat telling. It tells me that Frank still has a bit of competitive fire and he’s doing what he thinks is best for the program. There’s more to be done. It’s not like he’s angling for significantly more money. He’s not one to think about himself first. He truly loves this university. I’ve noticed a bit more vigor in him lately and can catch a Cheshire grin on him now and then.

Who knows. Frank might decide to bow out after 2016. He has that option. This contract extension just allows more flexibility and at the same time lets potential recruits know this program is still stable for a few more years at minimum with Frank at the helm.

  3. I’ll add one more thing that I think is crucial. As long as Frank is here Bud is here. That is and of itself is not a bad deal!

  4. Cmon now – there are supposedly 15 that voted “Hell no!” – please enlighten us on why it’s a bad move.

  5. IMHO anyone who thinks CFB doesn’t deserve, and shouldn’t have an extension on his contract has lost their proverbial mind,

In this age where moral fiber, ethics and personal accountability for your own actions seem to mean very little to many, and unfortunately to MOST in some cases,,,coach Frank Beamer represents the VERY BEST in college athletics, in doing things the right way, and for refusing to let winning at all costs overshadow winning with integrity and losing with grace. He represents himself, his family, his football program, Virgiinia Tech and college athletics with CLASS. He is a winner and a CLASS ACT – period.

He deserves to coach at VT, win or lose, as long as he decides he wants to.

Would I prefer to win the MNC rconsistently, vs. not at all? Sure.
Would I rather have no “down” years? Sure I would.
Would I prefer that our offense reached and maintained a level of supremacy we saw when a young Mike Vick was here? Absolutely.
If you want to get the point, you get my point

But if you ask me, that is not LIFE. It’s not life at Alabama. It’s not life at Ohio State. It’s not life at any other “big time” d1 foortball program,,and it’s not going to be any different at VT – with or wihtout Frank Beamer.

There are going to be losses, period. There are going to be seasons where we don’t win 10 games and games we lose that would help our stature if we won them. You don’t get to be the best at anything if you don’t fail at times, sometimes often. That’s LIFE.

So, what’s missing here? I will tell you what’s missing…. Scandals, cheating, arrogance, unethical and immoral character. Following the crowd that may be the wrong crowd to follow. THAT’S what’s missing with Frank Beamer at the helm of VT football.

I listen to the naysayers on the Message Boards who criticize our coaches, our players, our recruiting and all I can say is 1) you have the right to do so, 2) if you don’t like what’s going on with the VT football program you have every right to withdraw your physical, emotional and financial support of CFB, etc. and 3) but unless you have accomplished what Coach Beamer has accomplsihed on a football field, or in your OWN career endeavor, as far as I am concerned, you should look in the mirror and decide how much “smack” you should lay on COACH FRANK BEAMER

  6. B-St, I have thought of the 300 victory thing, too. But I really don’t think Frank is concerned about that. I think it is more of a fan thing to be proud of, maybe to validate his greatness. I don’t think Frank cares about personal glory.

Look, I think it’s simple. Frank has said it many times, as long as he’s healthy with the fire in the belly and a good quarterback, he’ll keep on coaching. Why does the Hokie nation try to keep looking beyond that? The man said it, so I take him at his word.

I think he sees a good talented bunch of youngsters, and he wants to play his hand out. I envision him capping off an excellent season with a major bowl win–maybe even a MNC–and announcing at game’s end that that’s it, he’s retiring. Get on Trigger and ride off into the sunset. Storybook ending. Doesn’t go past his peak.

I like the extension. Give him another if he still feels the fire in the belly and he has a good QB. I think he retires when he feels he’s reached some peak, some apex.

God bless Frank Beamer ‘ s heart!

  7. I assume that the extension is to assure recruits that they won’t be caught in a crack between coaches. I hope that Frank will decide to hang it up by the end of the 2016 season at latest. Otherwise, he will be pulling a Joe Paterno-Bobby Boowden on us and staying on for selfish reasons. Time is catching up with Beamer. Hopefully he will realize that, and cash it in soon.
