Memory Lane voting poll:

Which of the following games do you want me to review for a Memory Lane (praise be to Walter S.) publication?

Why is such-n-such game more compelling as well?

A quick synopsis of each game is in order before we vote…

  • 1993: VT=63, Pitt=7
Had an unexpected outcry for this game last year — and my boy Walter_S did not disappoint. I’ve (still) never seen this one as it was blacked-out in Blacksburg during the live broadcast. Suffice it to say that “touchdown” Tommy Edwards and company opened up a full case of whoop-ass upside Pitt’s head along the Allegheny River 17 years ago. Some consider this game to be the unsung turning point in the Frank Beamer era. Tough the Miami game might have some say in that as well.
  • 1993: Independence Bowl: VT=45, Indiana=20
Curious game, in that VT was in a competitive contest right up until the final 2-3 minutes before halftime erupted and VT simply detonated on the Hoosiers at that point in time. I was at Bowl practice that week and have a different point of view on how things went in terms of preparation due to friends I had on the squad at that time. You only get one first time in life — and Frank will always have one first Bowl game win.
  • 1995: VT=13, Miami=7
I recall this one all too well, as I was dating a ex HighTech at the time. We had partied with several Miami parents pre-game and with VT checking in at o-2; nobody was feeling any pain in the rain; much less any great hope at winning 10 games in a row. One jumpball along the Miami sideline about 3 hours later and VT was on their way. Who’d thunk it?
  • 1995 Sugar Bowl: VT=28, Texas=10
Easily Frank’s biggest bowl win by about a billion lightyears up until that time. Little ole Virginia Tech took the lead on a Marcus Parker plunge and a couple of epic special teams plays and never looked back. Do not let the Texas Bevo nonsense regarding a Cornerback dissuade you. The better team won and the better team did not have one Ricky Williams in its backfield either.
  • Other:
Please feel perfectly free to nominate a game you want me to try to run down. No promises, as some are easier to find than others; though I will indeed be making the effort on your behalf.

Splitsville or just too damn hurt and too damn young?

  1. Another choice might be 1999: VA Tech 62, Syracuse 0. It was on Thursday night, so it had a national television audience, and Syracuse was ranked 15th. That game brought a lot of national attention to the VA Tech program and I think to Michael Vick in particular. I ended up missing part of that game, so I don’t know what all the great plays were, but I do remember the interception return for a touchdown off of a beautiful Corey Bird deflection that got the rout going.
