Tech Thoughts: mini-me Scrimmage #2 notes:

Scrimmage #2: O >>> D!

Dangnation!
Michael Brewer just sparked the 1’s defense up yo’!

Wow!

That was the Ohio State apex fun-slinging, gun-slinging, wide open version of M.Brewer.
(he even ran for one score)

Not the over-thinking the offense version of M.Brewer that appeared to this trained Eye to sequester the O a bit at the midway point last season when he may have been reined in a bit too much or become a bit too mistake-phobic for his own good.

Motley Crew on the move
This guy starts for 33% of the A.c.c., maybe more!

Though I will say this; as happy as I am for my “Texas Forever” boy?
Brenden Motley may have narrowed the Qb2 to Qb1, gap. Motley is a good deal bigger than Brewer. Not only can he run better (duh); he gives the O a much more physical emphasis.

Wonder if a certain soon to be Hall of Fame coach might take a liking; to that?

That being said, allow me to play the foil and be Soberstreet for a change…

That set of 1’s (and 2’s) that M.Brewer just sparked up? Well, I may only have 36 hours of calc’ and stats in McBryde Hall, however, according to my calc’, today’s Defense is at 55% strength. We looked great on O; and I am excited. Don’t get me ‘rong on that.

However, Maddy, Fuller, Facyson, Marshall and Ken looked pretty dull just standing
around today. That’s 75% of our possibly 1st-best in the A.c.c. defensive front wall, and 45% of the starting defense overall that just made as many tackles as I did in today’s scrimmage if you are keeping score at home.

Still yet, methinks you are getting more of a Temple gone Florida T.Tebow whiff of what great Scot has in mind and therefore intends to do. This 2015 offense appears to have more vertical stretch element to it, and a bit more east-west inflexion as well. Motley only adds to that horizontal stretch up-n-down the line of scrimmage to boot. As that sound you just heard was the credible narrowing of the Pivot gap between Qb1 (Brewer) and Qb2 (Motley). Methinks Brewer starts, as Brewer can do more things (passing wise); as he is without measurement the more polished passer. Don’t believe me? Just ask his  10 for 14 for 256 yards on a mere 6, that’s s, i, x, TD day!

In point of fact, he throws the most catchable ball on campus since the days of Dave Meyer before MV1’s back-up snapped his clavicle or collarbone. Although, one could conceivably make the argument that it Motley adds more things in terms of Frank’s pet power-offensive mantra. (as does Te B.Hodges, who we might as well start calling: “the problem” as he is a T.Rex sized match-up problem for any defender who measures south of the N.f.l.! Shew! He’s a total beast on the edge)

Motley however is not so polished the passer, and therefore Motley’s playbook is a bit thinner no matter how thicker of a stud -and I do mean a plum stud- Read Option Qb runner he may indeed be. Motley is just one more thing to prepare for, Motley is just one more O&M headache for any opposing defense to have to scramble to game-plan against. Motley plays in 2015, folks; make no mistake on that. And Motley is a damn fine open-field play-making game-changing runner. Make no mistake on that one; either. (think a noticeably bigger T-mobile with 1 less move, or a smaller LT3, with 2-3 more moves, reader: take thy pick).

Be back sometime after Tuesday with much much more… coach God willing!

Your starting Qb right now would be ... who???

p.s. D.Clark is quietly making a third-string all-conference caliber move at ‘backer, and the legacy Baron kid is better than anyone thinks at Dt. (have I not been saying that one for 2+ years?)

Virginia Tech’s #1 O=improved! Virginia Tech’s #1 D=in civis.

LETS GO!

Hokies!

  1. If Maddy returns at full strength and both Barron and Williams are healthy (plus an improving Ricky Walker), we may see Marshall slide out to DE a few plays each game to give the starters a blow. That’s a nice insurance policy to have.

Nice to see Ford, Phillips and Hodges pick up where they left off last year. Now we need just enough of a running game to keep defenses honest, and I think we have the horses in the backfield if the O-line can jell. I really worry about an injury to any of our starters on the line because we have no proven depth at all.

    1. They say that Marshall is just not a De.
He just so happens to be a smaller Dt and nothing more.

Though I do wanna agry here.
May need him out there; in a pinch.

    1. Well; if he is that good/quick on the inside as a Gap jumping Dt?
Any De reps will only tire the Dt quickness game in him, down all the more.
